THE DILEMMA

From early on, we had an idea of what we wanted to make, a video that uniquely captures the space that is Hunter College. The three buildings of Hunter can be quite overwhelming sometimes, like a maze that you can't escape from. We wanted to show this by having a student walking through the school to try and get outside to the food truck during his break from class. But from the start of his mission, he starts losing his way and getting lost within the maze of the hallways and stairways. We used a digital handheld camera to shoot the scenes, making a more realistic cinematographic perspective possible. We used some over-the-shoulder shots of Ed has he walks through the second floor and into the auditorium, at which point we wanted to have our climactic moment- Ed thinks he's finally found an exit, but it ends up being the entrance to a big empty auditorium, an unfriendly space. (Who even knew there was an auditorium there anyway?) Also in the editing phase, we decided to take out the soundtrack at this climactic moment, having just silence answer back to Ed. Basically, we wanted to show that Hunter can be its own character, an antagonistic presence, and make you feel lost and smothered and off-track. All he wanted to do was get some food on time, and he wasn't able to do so in the end because the labyrinth that is Hunter stood in his way :(
